Vanna is a taciturn person and looks constantly moody. His stern look often dissuades people to try and interact with him. He doesn't particularly draws nor seeks attention. His youthful face definitely wouldn't give away either his personality or his occupation as a mercenary. But the male Viera only built this persona as a coping mechanism after the losses of close friends of his. Beneath that mask hides an awfully honest and loyal person who only reveals his true self to the people he deems trustworthy.

A REALM REBORN"Son of the Forest"

Abandoned soon after his birth in the forest from which his parents hailed, two adult Vieras decided to take him in and raised him as their own.He was then called Vanna and grew up with their biological child, Edenn. It was a blessing for them both to have someone to grow up with, their unbreakable bond helping them through hardships and obstacles. Vanna was a shy but sincere kid while Edenn was more daring and loud. Despite their differences, they made an incredible pairing and complemented each other beautifully. As a Viera's gender only becomes apparent later in life, it was only after a few years that they found out they were both males. As such, the rigorous Wood-Warder training was awaiting them both to give them the skills necessary to fight, hunt and survive in order to protect their forest. Either that, or they could leave. The choice was ultimately theirs. They both chose to go through the intense training even though it was known to be brutal, so much so that they often lead to casualties.Unfortunately, Edenn was one of them. He never returned. The circumstances of his disappearance were never known either but the instructor told Vanna not to expect any miracles. He was most likely gone, like so many others. It left an incredibly deep wound in Vanna's heart as he survived and completed the training. Returning to his parents with a heavy heart and announcing Edenn's passing felt horrible. They knew of the risk and didn't blame Vanna for it but still, he felt down. He felt like he ultimately betrayed them by letting him go. Without the brother he was so close to, who would guide him now?His parents then told Vanna the truth about his unknown origins and encouraged him to live his life freely. It still warmed their heart to know that they still had a son rather than none at all.

HEAVENSWARD"Heart of Cold"

And so, he left the forest that saw him grow. Arriving in Gridania, he began his adventure in the Lancers' Guild, starting with simple quests, helping people around him and steadily making a name for himself out there. He then met the Scions, traveled to the other main cities of Eorzea and picked up different jobs every time, perfecting his mastery of all these different melee weapons with the discipline he acquired during his Wood-Warder training. However, as quests and missions kept him busy on the daily, Vanna started to tire. These newly acquired titles, these responsibilities, the expectations put on his shoulders were weighing on his mind. Before he realized it, the memories of his brother came back to haunt him.Vanna wanted to move forward, be of help, live his life. But while his body kept walking ever onward, his mind held him back. Still, he stood tall next to the Warrior of Light as they fled to Ishgard during the Ul'dahn insurection. But eventually, it all reached a breaking point.Meeting Haurchefant Greystone was... a breath of fresh air. A second wind to clear Vanna's mind from his worries. He reminded the Viera of his lost brother so terribly, he naturally became rather close to the knight. The way he behaved was surprisingly close to Edenn's and yet Haurchefant was unlike no one else Vanna ever met. However, the Elezen's path would come to a close in front of Vanna's eyes. The Viera would lose someone dear to his heart again. And that's when he lost it. The survivor's guilt he felt the day he lost his brother came back stronger than ever before. His frustration, his helplessness... It devoured him.Vanna would never truly be the same ever again, locking his quiet and gentle persona behind the mask of a cold and stern assassin. Vanna still quietly stayed by the Scions' side as they ended the Dragonsong War but all of the sacrifices they made were too much to bear and marked the end of his adventures with them. He wasn't even there to witness yet another loss and a revelation that would lead the Warrior of Light and the Scions to their next objective: Reclaim Ala Mhigo and Doma from the hands of the Empire.

STORMBLOOD"Looking for Death"

As the Scions started their new adventure, Vanna went on his own journey, one without a destination. He didn't particularly want to cut ties with them but he also didn't want to suffer the loss of a close friend anymore. He simply ran away. He needed to see what he could do on his own. He was done relying on other people to carry his hopes. Where did that lead him? Straight at the heart of the Empire. While the Warrior of Light and the Scions sparked rebellion once more in Ala Mhigo and Doma, the rumors of an assassin roaming the streets of Garlemald started spreading like wildfire. Some rumors said he was aiming to get rid of the Legatus of each Legion, others speculated that he was working for Zenos yae Galvus, some of them even said he was plotting against the Emperor himself. None were quite accurate... But some were close to the truth.Nothing but combat interested Vanna at that point. He was in the wrong headspace and genuinely thought he couldn't die no matter where he went. Death only struck those around him after all. This flawed logic led him to cross blades with a man who called himself the Shadowhunter and claimed to be hunting Ascians. This man might've been lying and trusting Garleans wasn't something Vanna was used to do just yet but the masks at his belt and the disillusioned look in his eyes were enough to convince the Viera. As time passed, the rumors died down and Vanna was now working with the Shadowhunter on investigating the Black Rose. But soon enough, the events overseas would be on every Garlean Legion's mind which allowed the mercenaries to finally act and investigate the factories creating the chemical weapon as well as the few locations were it has been used. It was during one of those investigations that Vanna would meet Alphinaud again in the Burn, a desert area en route to Garlemald. It was an unexpected reunion, one that left Vanna sceptical. They tried to catch up, having time to talk about the situation over in Ala Mhigo and Doma as well as Vanna's disappearance which saddened the Scions. After all, the Viera just... vanished, not even leaving a letter or a note to explain his departure. They tried to look for him but never found anything. Moreover, they had some urgent matters at hand and couldn't try for much longer even if they wanted to. After hearing all of that, he obviously felt bad, felt like he betrayed them.He couldn't even apologize. Both Alphinaud and Vanna were then suddenly struck by a mysterious phenomenon that left them unconscious. The Shadowhunter had no choice but to bring both of them back to Alisaie and the Warrior of Light when they met.

SHADOWBRINGERS"Healing into the Night"

As he opened his eyes, he found himself in the Crystal Tower and was welcomed by the Exarch. Since he arrived at the same time as Alphinaud, he wandered in the First for one year before the Warrior of Light's arrival to Norvrandt.Once the situation of this reflection has been explained to him, Vanna felt like he had to discard the past few months of progress, which left a sour taste in his mouth. Still, there was nothing much he could do about it since none of them were able to return to the Source just yet.It was time to wander again though this time, he couldn't simply roam around this unknown world with no objective in mind and wait for the Crystal Exarch to finally summon the Warrior of Light. Nothing would change if he did. He would still be relying on them to do all of the dirty work. Alphinaud didn't wait a single second to get to work either.Determined to be forgiven for disappearing so suddenly from the Scions' sights, Vanna offered to go and see each of them to apologize properly and help out whenever he could. Much to his surprise, most of them were relieved to see him again but they also noticed that something had changed within him.The Viera ended up staying with Y'shtola, or "Matoya" rather ; allowing her and the Night's Blessed to go about their day as peacefully as possible. He was only there to push back any attacks from the Children of the Everlasting Dark and guarantee the safety of the Night's Blessed whenever they left their settlement.Aside from his new duties, staying in Slitherbough slowly opened his mind and broke that cold-hearted persona he built to protect himself from the pain of losing a loved one. The Night's Blessed and so many others throughout Norvrandt had to deal with it on a daily basis. It didn't make it any easier for them, it's simply not something you get used to. And yet, they had faith. The way they lived, the way they grieved... It touched him deeply and inspired him. As they once told him: "In times such as these, when everything can be taken away in an instant, it is all too easy to lose sight of why we fight to go on living. It is not to hold fast to material things, but to hold those who went before us in our hearts—to keep alive the legacy they have left us."It was a revelation the mercenary needed to finally start healing from the old scars that kept him chained to the past. They would now help him grow rather than define who he was. He would forever be grateful to this quiet and peaceful community that freed him from his shackles. The rest of their adventures with the Warrior of Darkness is history. At the end of it all, the Scions were all ready to return to the Source.
